Don’t let the thought of downsizing overwhelm you!

Whether a life-changing moment comes knocking on your door unexpectedly, or you’ve made the decision that you are “ready”, the mere thought of moving out of your family home can seem like an overwhelming task.

My goal is to take the overwhelm out of the downsizing and relocation process by offering encouragement, advice, and resources.   Below are 5 steps to get you started.

1. Begin with small goals

If your first goal is to tackle your large attic you might find yourself feeling overwhelmed before you even start.  Try not to look at the “big picture” every minute of every day.  Instead,  focus on short-term small goals with your smallest projects first and early.  Begin with a bedroom that is no longer used, or perhaps even one closet.

Pro Tip - have your goals go from easiest to hardest so you can experience a sense of accomplishment every time you reach your next goal.

2. Allow time for reminiscing

As you go through drawers and boxes you haven’t opened in years, you’ll inevitably discover some forgotten treasures that will take you down memory lane (some good, some bad).  Allow time to cherish these moments as you decide whether to keep them or give them away.

Pro Tip - it's the memory not the "item" that we cherish.

3. Make it fun

Downsizing doesn’t need to be a dirty word. Going into it with a positive attitude can help lighten the load. Invite your family and/or friends and make it a downsizing party complete with refreshments and games. Take a moment to share your memories and have them record you sharing the memories…you just may be the last person to ‘know’ this story, so pass it on!

Pro Tip - make the prizes of your games items you no longer need, but still cherish.

4. Commit to a schedule

If your future downsizing move is down the road and not immediate, it’s easy to fall into the mindset that we can wait until “tomorrow” to make progress. Set deadlines for yourself and create a schedule of tasks to help stay on track.

Pro Tip - Reward yourself after each small goal is reached. Just make sure the reward is not more stuff!

5. Create categories for your stuff

Create five categories to help you separate all the items you’re going through:

1) keeping

2) family and friends  (give them a deadline to pick up items they want)

3) donation items

4) items to be sold

5) trash and recycling

Pro Tip - NO "maybe" piles! Commit to one of the above categories.

Downsizing and moving can be a significant transition for older adults.  It is my hope that this list helps you get started with downsizing.
